A native of California, born in 1936 and raised in the southern part of Los Angeles, Louis
Gadal developed a strong interest in drawing. He received a winning scholarship to the
Chouinard Art Institute, in Los Angeles, from the Examiner Scholastic Sports Award Com-
petition, while he was still in high school.

At Chouinard Art Institute, under a four year scholarship, he studied drawing with Donald
Graham, Herb Jopsen and Bernard Garbutt. He studied watercolor with Rex Brandt and
Edward Reep, two noted California watercolorists.

Following graduation, he spent the next fifteen years developing his drawing skills and
exhibited nationally. He furthered his study in printmaking at Chouinard Art Institute,
studying Lithography and Intaglio with printmaker Joe Funk of Tamarind Lithography

For the past twenty years he has maintained his own Architectural Illistration firm, where
he has worked on such projects as the Corning Museum in New York, the Rockwell
Museum and center for Western Art in Corning, New York, and locally, the Bunker Hill

As his career developed, he became interested in watercolor painting, which then led him to
producing many landscapes and seascapes, depicting the California area in a traditional
manner. His subjects vary to include figures, portraits and western portrayals. His
mediums of choice are watercolor, acrylic and egg tempera.

He is listed in "Who's Who in America", published in American Artist Magazine and
published in the books, the "Best of Watercolor 2", "Light and Shadow", 1998, Rockport
Publishers Gloucester, Massachusetts.

His teaching credits extend to include "California Institute of the Arts", in Valencia, Ca.
and Parsons Art Institute in Los Angeles and art seminar demonstrating his painting abilities.
He has an extensive list of exhibitions, both locally and nationally and his art is owned by
corporations and private collectors as well as museums. Louis is a signature member of the
Niagra Frontier Watercolor Society, the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, Watercolor West,
National Watercolor Society (selected for the 1994 Traveling Exhibition), American Society
of Marine Artists signature member and in 1992 his entry for the American Watercolor
Society was selected for the AWS 126th Annual Traveling Exhibition. Again, in 1995 his
painting was selected for the 128th Annual Traveling Exhibition and won the Dagmar Tribble
Award. In 1996, he won the Gold Medal Award for the Best of Watercolor, San Dimas
Western Art Show, and won first prize in the National Watercolor Society member show. He is
a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Art Program. Louis continues to be an active participant in
the art world.

In 1991, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998, he has made the final 100 selection for the
Arts for the Parks, Jackson Hole, Wyomming. He won the Bronze Maritime Merit Award for his
winning entry "The Eppeltonhall", which was reproduced in their Collector Stamp in 1992. And
again, in 1996, he won the Bronze Maritime Merit Award and cash award for his winning entry
"The Life Boat".In 1998 Louis won the Region I Award and Silver Medal for his watercolor pain-
